You don’t need a Smart ID to vote on 4 November 2026

A valid green barcoded ID book or Temporary Identity Certificate is also accepted. Check the documents you can use and Home Affairs’ election-week hours.

Registered voters do not need a Smart ID card specifically to vote in the municipal elections on Wednesday, 4 November 2026. A valid green barcoded South African ID book or a valid Temporary Identity Certificate (TIC) is also accepted, according to the IEC’s voting guide.

Can I still vote with my green ID book?

Yes, if it is valid and you meet the voting requirements. Upgrading to a Smart ID is not a condition for voting with an otherwise valid accepted document. IEC instructions explain that officials check your identity and registration when you arrive.

You must be a South African citizen, be at least 18 to vote and be registered. An identity document alone does not establish voting eligibility. IEC registration guidance distinguishes the age for registering from the age for voting.

Can I use a passport, driving licence or ID copy?

No. Passports, driving licences, student cards and photocopies of identity documents are not accepted for voting. Bring a Smart ID, valid green barcoded ID book or valid TIC. Government voter guidance published on 26 October confirms these requirements for the 2026 election.

What if my ID is lost or my card is not ready?

Ask Home Affairs about a TIC. The government’s identity-document service page says you can apply if your ID application will not be completed in time to vote. It lists a R70 fee, your ID number for verification and two ID photographs.

For a lost, stolen or damaged ID, Western Cape Government guidance also identifies the TIC route, subject to fingerprint verification. Confirm the available services and supporting documents with Home Affairs before travelling.

An application or appointment does not guarantee immediate issue. The certificate you present for voting must be valid.

When will Home Affairs offices open?

Home Affairs’ 27 October election notice extends front-office hours for ID applications, collections of completed documents and TICs where applicable. Election-day hours run from 07:00 to 21:00.

These extended hours apply to Home Affairs front offices. If you use a bank’s Smart ID service, check that branch’s hours and available services directly.

Where must I vote?

Vote at the station where you are registered. Check your details on the IEC website, SMS your 13-digit ID number to 32810, or send “Hi” to the IEC’s WhatsApp number, 060 088 0000.

The government’s election-day guide confirms these channels and voting hours of 07:00–21:00 on 4 November 2026.
