Police said voting continued uninterrupted at Hanover Park Civic Centre in Cape Town after a confrontation near the station left one officer injured and led to four arrests on Wednesday, 4 November.

According to Colonel André Traut’s account reported by IOL, Anti-Gang Unit members intervened shortly after 10:00 when they saw two groups throwing stones at each other. Members of one group then allegedly threw stones and beer bottles at officers.

Traut said an officer suffered an injury to his left hand and discharged three warning shots. Public Order Police responded, and no community members were injured, according to the police account.

Police account keeps voting status clear

The four suspects were aged between 16 and 20. Police said a case of public violence and an attack on police had been registered, with court appearances expected once charges were formalised. The report does not establish convictions or a political motive.

The distinction between a nearby incident and an interruption of voting matters to residents deciding whether they can exercise their vote. This police account concerns one station at the time reported. Check fresh information before extending it to another place or time.

A community under sustained safety pressure

The incident follows an 8 October Western Cape government statement announcing additional LEAP Reaction Unit resources in Hanover Park after a rise in gang-related shootings. The province described cooperation with the SAPS Anti-Gang Unit and urged residents to pass information through official channels without confronting suspected criminals.

That earlier deployment announcement is background. It does not establish the circumstances of Wednesday’s confrontation or the effectiveness of every policing measure.

Check current station information

The IEC’s 4 November notice says voters within voting-station boundaries at closing will still be assisted beyond 21:00. For current voting arrangements, use the Electoral Commission’s official channels and TPR’s voting guide.

For unverified footage or captions alleging that a station has been shut, check the place, date and original source before forwarding. TPR’s verification tracker separates official records from claims requiring further evidence.
