Unemployed registered tourist guides in Nelson Mandela Bay who have professional skills but no stable route into work can apply for online business and enterprise development training advertised for the 2026/27 financial year.

The opportunity offers eligible guides a chance to strengthen the practical business skills needed to turn destination knowledge and guiding experience into a sustainable tourism enterprise. Freelance and employed registered guides may also apply.

Applications close at 17:00 on Monday, 7 September 2026.

The programme is funded by the Department of Tourism, according to the published notice shared by Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. Its focus is the commercial side of guiding: establishing an enterprise, managing it properly, meeting legal and administrative requirements and developing tourism products that can generate income beyond occasional individual assignments.

For an unemployed guide, the central question is not whether they possess tourism knowledge. It is how that knowledge can become reliable economic activity. The programme does not promise a job, funding, selection or business success. It offers training intended to help eligible guides build a more structured route into the tourism economy.

Who can apply

The opportunity is for people who are already registered as tourist guides. It is not an entry-level guide-registration programme.

According to the published criteria, applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents and must hold at least an NQF level 2 tourist-guide competency. The notice expressly requires a full qualification, rather than a skills programme, in nature, culture or adventure guiding.

Applicants must have a tourist-guide registration that remains valid when they apply. Unemployed, freelance and employed guides are all eligible, provided they meet the remaining requirements.

The notice also calls for at least one to two years of work experience as a tourist guide and effective communication skills.

Because the training is online, applicants need basic computer skills, their own laptop or desktop computer and stable internet access. The programme is expected to run for approximately three months.

What applicants must prepare

This application requires more than completing a form.

Applicants must submit a motivation of no more than one page explaining why they should be selected for business and enterprise development training. They must also submit a concise CV.

The published notice asks for:

  • full name and surname;
  • a copy of a South African identity document or proof of permanent residence;
  • a valid tourist-guide registration card;
  • proof of the relevant tourist-guide qualification or competency;
  • a motivation of no more than one page; and
  • a concise CV.

Selected candidates will be subject to vetting and will be required to sign a learner contract recording their commitment to the programme.

The motivation is an opportunity to be specific. A strong submission should explain what the applicant already knows, the visitor experience or service they want to develop, the market they hope to reach and the business problem the training could help them solve.

From guiding work to an enterprise

A tourist guide does more than accompany visitors. Guides interpret history, culture, nature and place. They often shape a visitor’s understanding of a destination and influence whether that visitor recommends it or returns.

The Department of Tourism describes tourist guiding as an important part of the tourism value chain. Its existing support material for guides includes information on tax compliance, business registration and contract management.

The enterprise programme places those business questions beside the guide’s professional knowledge.

A freelance guide may need stronger pricing, contracting and record-keeping systems. An employed guide may have an idea for a specialist route or visitor product but lack the tools to test it. An unemployed registered guide may know the destination well but need a workable route from irregular assignments to a formal enterprise.

The Department’s 2026/27 Annual Performance Plan provides wider policy context. It includes a target to train 50 tourist guides in business and enterprise development skills. The programme notice remains the controlling source for the application criteria and selection process.

Why the opportunity matters in Nelson Mandela Bay

Nelson Mandela Bay’s tourism economy brings together coastline, wildlife, liberation history, built heritage, culture, food, sport and access to the wider Eastern Cape.

Those assets create room for more than conventional sightseeing. A guide can potentially build specialised walking routes, heritage interpretation, educational visits, cultural experiences, accessible tourism products, nature-based excursions or services for conference and cruise visitors.

The opportunity is not automatic. A good idea still requires research, pricing, compliance, customer service and a realistic market. Training cannot replace demand or capital. It can, however, help a guide assess an idea properly and build the systems needed to operate it.

That matters in a city where economic development depends partly on local people capturing more value from the assets around them. A visitor experience built and delivered locally can support income, strengthen the destination’s offering and create connections with transport operators, accommodation establishments, restaurants, cultural workers and community enterprises.
