Bamanye Matiwane
TPR Executive Editor
Bamanye Matiwane is a South African socio-political activist and youth leader.
He served two consecutive terms as SRC president at Nelson Mandela University, where he sat on the University Council and championed the One Student, One Laptop legacy project. He also advocated for greater inclusion of the taxi industry in student transport at NMU, presenting the largely Black-owned sector as a vehicle for economic transformation.
Matiwane later served as President of the South African Students Congress and as a member of the NSFAS Board, where he contributed to work on centralised student-allowance payments and improved access to accommodation for African students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
His experience includes service on the Eastern Cape MEC for Education’s advisory council, as district chairperson of the SACP’s Mbuyiselo Ngwenda District and as deputy chairperson of the NMU Institutional Forum. He contributes commentary on youth leadership, higher education and international relations.
