Data and method

The record, plainly defined

What this register is

An imported snapshot of the Commission’s certified lists of 16 September 2026: nine provinces, 257 municipalities, all parties and all independents. Nomination rows and list order are retained. A documented transcription repair removes PDF footer text from name fields. Where the source documents contain irregularities, they are shown and documented, not quietly corrected.

Checks against the announced figures

The published lists contain 68 fewer records than the totals announced at the Commission’s briefing, and three rows carry no name. The imported records are published; the discrepancy remains under review, not filled with inferred names. Corrections are handled through the standing corrections process.

The source of record

The register reproduces the Electoral Commission’s certified candidate lists as issued on 16 September 2026. The post-ruling import is pending an authoritative revised roster. Source checks and known discrepancies are documented; a missing name is not proof of current exclusion.

Open data

The full register is available province by province under CC BY 4.0, with attribution to the Electoral Commission as the source of record: EC · FS · GP · KZN · LP · MP · NC · NW · WC · manifest · data-quality report · party logos.

What the data layer does not do

No ratings, endorsements or biographical claims appear in the data layer. Work on candidates and wards is published separately by the research desk, under the publication’s editorial standards.

Questions readers ask

How do I find the candidates on my ballot?

Choose your province, municipality and ward above, or search by name. The municipality index links to ward records from the 16 September snapshot. Read the update notice before treating a result as current.

Does the register show every candidate?

The register contains 136,722 imported records from the IEC publication of 16 September 2026. Later reinstatements are not yet included. An absent name or party does not establish current exclusion from the election.

Why does the total differ from the announced figure?

The Commission announced 136,790 candidates; the certified lists contain 136,722 rows. The register publishes every record the lists contain and notes the difference rather than adjusting either figure. The detail is in the data-quality report.

Can I report an error in a record?

Yes, through the research desk or the corrections process. Confirmed errors are corrected promptly and logged in the open.

Is this the official Electoral Commission site?

No. This is a public-information service of The People’s Register, an openly identified political publication. The source of record is the Electoral Commission, whose certified lists are linked on every page.
